Website SEO Audit: 10 Mistakes That Are Killing Your Google Rankings

You have a website, but Google seems not to see you? The problem is probably not what you sell, but how your website is built. These 10 technical and content mistakes show up in every second SEO audit…

You have a website, but Google seems not to see you? Traffic is flat or even falling? The problem is probably not that you don't have good products or services — but that your website contains mistakes Google punishes.

Mistake 1: A slow website

Since 2021 Google has used speed as a direct ranking factor (Core Web Vitals). If your website takes longer than 3 seconds to load, you lose visitors and rankings. Check it with PageSpeed Insights — the ideal score is above 90 for both mobile and desktop.

Mistake 2: Unoptimised meta titles and descriptions

The meta title is what Google shows as the headline of a search result. If every page has the same title, or a title without a keyword — Google doesn't understand what the page is about. Every page needs a unique, relevant title with a keyword.

Mistake 3: Thin or duplicate content

Google ranks pages with too little content (fewer than 300 words) lower. Duplicate content is even worse — Google penalises it. Every page needs original, valuable content.

Mistake 4: Missing alt text on images

Google can't read images — only text. Alt text is a description of the image for Google and for visually impaired users. Without alt text you lose SEO points for every image on your website.

Mistake 5: The website isn't mobile-friendly

More than 60% of searches in Slovakia happen on mobile. Since 2019 Google has primarily indexed the mobile version of websites (mobile-first indexing). If your website doesn't work properly on mobile, you're in trouble.

Mistake 6: Missing internal links

Internal links help Google understand which pages are important. Websites without internal linking are like little islands — Google can't index them properly.

Mistake 7: Missing HTTPS

Google marks a website without an SSL certificate as not secure. Chrome shows a warning, which hurts both your SEO and your company's credibility.

Mistake 8: 404 errors and broken links

Broken links hurt both UX and SEO. Google sees them as a signal of a low-quality website. Check your website regularly with tools such as Screaming Frog or Google Search Console.

Mistake 9: Ignoring structured data (Schema markup)

Structured data helps Google show rich snippets — enhanced results with stars, prices and reviews. Businesses that don't use it hand the advantage to their competitors.

Mistake 10: No keyword strategy

Many websites are written according to what the owner likes — not according to what customers search for. Without keyword research you are writing content into the void. Every page should target a specific keyword with real search volume.

How to start an SEO audit

Start with free tools: Google Search Console (indexing errors), PageSpeed Insights (speed) and Google Analytics (user behaviour). For an in-depth audit I recommend Ahrefs, Semrush or Screaming Frog.
