Why Google Ads Is Wasting Your Money Without Results (and How to Fix It)

"We tried Google ads, but they don't work." I hear this very often. The problem is usually not Google Ads — it is how the campaigns are set up. Here are 8 concrete reasons why your campaigns…

"We tried Google ads, but they don't work." Business owners spend €200, €500, sometimes even €1,000 — and get no results.
Then they switch off the campaigns and decide that "Google Ads isn't for us." But the problem is usually not Google Ads. The problem is the setup.

Reason 1: Broad match keywords without control

If your keyword is set to broad match, Google shows your ad for an incredibly wide range of searches — including completely irrelevant ones. Businesses lose tens of percent of their budget on clicks from people who were looking for something else.
Solution: Use phrase match or exact match keywords and check the Search Terms Report regularly.

Reason 2: No negative keyword list

Negative keywords are words for which your ad must not appear. If you sell a premium product, add "free", "discount" and "cheap" to your negative keywords. Without this filter you pay for clicks that will never convert.

Reason 3: A weak or unoptimised landing page

The ad brings a visitor to your website — but the website has to convince them to act. If the landing page is slow, confusing, without a clear CTA or trust elements — the conversion rate will be close to zero.
Solution: The landing page must have a clear headline that matches the ad, a specific offer, social proof (reviews, testimonials) and a prominent call to action.

Reason 4: Geographic targeting is too broad

If you do business in Bratislava but your campaign runs across the whole of Slovakia — you pay for clicks from people who will never come to you. Set your geographic targeting precisely to the area where you actually do business.

Reason 5: Ads run at the wrong time

Google Ads lets you set when your ads are shown (ad scheduling). If you provide B2B services, it doesn't pay to spend your budget at weekends. Look at the reports and switch off ads at times with a low conversion rate.

Reason 6: A low Quality Score

Quality Score is Google's rating from 1 to 10 that measures the relevance of your ad. A low QS = Google charges you more for the same positions. Improve your QS by adjusting your ads so they match the keyword and the landing page as closely as possible.

Reason 7: Missing conversion tracking

If you don't have conversion tracking set up, you don't know which keywords and ads bring you customers. You are running the whole campaign blind.
Solution: Set up conversion tracking through Google Tag Manager — forms, calls, purchases. Without conversion tracking, every optimisation is just guessing.

Reason 8: Campaigns aren't optimised

Launching a campaign and letting it run without optimisation is the surest way to spend money without results. Google Ads needs regular optimisation: reviewing keywords, adjusting bids, A/B testing ads and analysing data.

Conclusion

Google Ads works — if someone sets it up properly and optimises it regularly.
If you have spent money without results, it is most likely one of the reasons above.
